To our GCS staff, welcome back.

To our students and families, we’re ready.

At last night’s board meeting, Goshen Community Schools approved Dr. Karen Blaha as the Interim Principal of Goshen Intermediate School for the 2025–26 school year.

Dr. Blaha is a familiar face in our district, having previously served as principal at Chamberlain Elementary and as Director of Curriculum and Director of English Learners for GCS.

Most recently, she’s been serving as Program Coordinator and Associate Professor of Education at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois, where she has led the Educational Leadership Master’s Program and advised doctoral candidates.

Dr. Blaha brings more than 30 years of experience in education, leadership, and instructional coaching, and she will provide steady, student-centered leadership as we begin a new year at GIS.

GCS will launch a national search this spring for the next full-time principal, who will begin in the 2026–27 school year.

Welcome back, Dr. Blaha!

This mindset isn’t just for our staff, it’s for our students too. Imagine the progress you could make if you focused on improving just a little bit each day, whether it’s in the classroom, on the field, on stage, or in your relationships. Small, consistent steps add up to big results.

This week and next, the Mental Performance Daily Podcast, hosted by Brian Cain, is dedicating a special two-week mini seminar to Goshen Community Schools on “getting 1% better.” These short, daily episodes are only a few minutes long and offer practical, motivating tips that align perfectly with this theme.

We’re about two weeks away from the first day of We’re about two weeks away from the first day of school, and we want to thank our families for their patience as we work through a few system-related issues that are listed below:

Skyward Maintenance:
We’re currently upgrading to Skyward's new system, which is called Qmlativ (Q), and understand that families are anxious after several weeks of Skyward maintenance that is taking longer than anticipated. Our Skyward team is aware of the delay and is working hard to complete the migration. We expect the new system to be fully up and running by the end of this week. With that said, parents may not have access to Skyward until next week due to individual schools making schedule changes.

Bus Quest App:
Some families are experiencing issues with the Bus Quest app, often due to having multiple accounts (one for each child). Only one account is needed, with all students added under that account. If you’re having trouble logging in, please call the Transportation Department at 574-533-7176 for help.

Free & Reduced Meal Applications:
Meal application processing is still delayed due to system issues outside of our control. We will notify families as soon as the system is fully functional and ready to accept applications.

We sincerely apologize for the inconveniences this has caused and will cause, but we appreciate your patience and understanding as we get everything ready for the new school year.

A well-deserved honor for a quiet hero.

Last week at the INSROA state conference, GJHS School Resource Officer Tommy Steele received a brand-new award that will now bear his name moving forward—the Tommy Steele Behind-the-Shield Award.

This award was created to recognize the kind of behind-the-scenes leadership and selfless service that makes a lasting impact. Tommy’s commitment to Goshen Junior High and to student safety across Indiana is second to none, and this honor couldn’t be more fitting.

Thank you, Officer Steele, for showing up every day with humility, heart, and purpose. Your influence reaches further than you know.
